We are having A Day

Do you ever have days where the kids just can't seem to get along, obey or be motivated to do their school work? We are having one of those days. At one point I had 3 kids screaming, in 3 different rooms. Why? I don't even remember. I chose to blow dry my hair so I wouldn't have to listen. :-) The baby went down for a nap at 10 this morning. My 2nd born spent 30 minutes in her bed screaming and crying. I finally went in once she'd been quiet for a LONG time. Different child. How is that? She has been so pleasant since then. Our oldest struggles with math. STRUGGLES. And has a very bad attitude about this. So, I've spent the last 45 minutes dealing with math and bad attitude. (A side note on this - her math is VERY easy. We are just starting 4th grade Saxon and she's half way through 4th grade. We're talking addition problems right now. Addition. Tears over addition.) Ahhh. Joy. Fun. Did I mention we're supposed to be getting ready for a trip? We're leaving for Ohio tomorrow (don't be jealous, Claire!). This should be fun.

On another note. Our oldest had her first level 5 gymnastics competition yesterday. It went horribly. Her first event was beam. She was so nervous she was shaking. She went way too fast and fell off the beam in the very beginning. She fell off again when she did her cartwheel. Needless to say, her score was BAD. That set the mood for the rest of the meet. The one event she thought she would stink at was bars. It was her last event. At this point she had been sitting and crying in between events. She does bars and did GREAT. 8.2. Which helped her ego quite a bit! She was still silent the whole way home (an hour) and moped for a bit. I took her out to run errands and she felt much better after. She isn't even quitting gymnastics (which she said she was after 2 events). :-)

See you next week!

A Few Pictures

I realized that I haven't put any pictures on here lately. Which means I actually had to get out the camera and download the pictures. Which means I thought about doing this a few days ago and am just now getting to it!

This first one is of my 4 year old BOY. He is definitely the 3rd child - quite a clown! He put this on (and has no shirt on under his coat) just so he could go outside and make his sisters laugh! Surprise, it worked. :-)

Here is our oldest. She got ahold of my camera and took a picture of herself. And then proceeded to take the next couple of pictures on here too.

I decided to teach her a little about taking pictures, you now, how being above someone or below someone takes a very funny angle. She loved it. Not sure we will ever get her to take a picture of someone straight on again! Here is our petite 6 year old, looks like a giant.

Here's our baby. Isn't he cute? :-)

And here is my handsome husband. He definitely did not want me taking his picture, since he'd just gotten up and his hair was all over the place. Maybe I should call him pancake face.

A rant

I was reading today about the "Quiverfull" belief (mindset?). It was a discussion on a forum that I read. I, personally, have never read a huge amount by people who are "quiverfull". Truthfully, I just didn't want to hear their reasons why we should all have as many children as possible - I didn't want to feel guilt. Which, funny, actually sometimes THAT made me feel guilty. I was unwilling to even think about it. I, supposedly, prevent pregnancy and am ok with that. :-) That could be a subject of a whole different post.

So, what is the point of this? I was just saddened with how many people have been hurt by either buying into that mindset, or by someone who has that mindset and considers themselves "more blessed by God" (for their large number of children) or more advanced (?) in their spiritual lives. So, my rant is not about quiverfull people, but anyone who takes something that they feel God has spoken to them about and they decide to make it a mandate. How many things can we list? Dresses only; long hair only on girls; short hair only on boys; never cut your hair; no debt ever, for anything; never attend R rated movies; you MUST homeschool your children; women should NEVER work outside of the home; KJV only; mode of baptism; etc.
I'm sure I could keep going all night.

Let's talk about this, seriously. What is salvation? Ephesians 2:8-9 - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast. That's it. Simple. Faith, God's gift. NOTHING we do saves us. We are equal in God's eyes. I don't care how "spiritual" you look for following rules. It is all about God's grace. We should NEVER get arrogant and feel like we are more spiritual than someone else because of where we are in our relationship with Christ. God has called each of us to live for Him. That doesn't mean, at all, that our lives will look even slightly similar. For some of us, that means we will be single, for others, married with kids. Some of us will be missionaries, some millionaires. The point is, it is about our relationship with Christ. What is He calling you to? He doesn't care if your best friend is homeschooling her children and having as many babies as her body is able. He may not call you to that.

I will confess. I struggle so much with wanting to feel like a better Christian because of the path God has chosen for us. But, I have to remind myself - these are not MY choices. They are His. If I am able to do anything right or good, it is because of Him. Not me. It's easy for me to remember the path I was choosing for myself before I started walking with Christ. So, easy to be humbled and reminded that on my own, I will not choose wisely!

Oh, another thought I had. Apparently people feel like if having children is a blessing, then not having them is a curse. That sort of makes sense. But let's think. Do you give all your children the same gifts/blessings? If that is the case, in my family, they could all get gymnastics leotards or ballet stuff. Not very fitting for my little boys. Oh, so maybe I should give them all toys fitting for a toddler boy. I don't think that would work for my 9 year old girl! So, for my 4 year old weapons are a blessing, but for my 9 year old, sort of a curse? Right? Yes, children are a blessing. Yes, yes, yes. That should be our mindset. But that doesn't mean that we should all have a bunch of them. Another thought, isn't celibacy a gift? Maybe we should all be celibate! Again, God gives us each gifts that He knows we need. That doesn't mean that we will all get the same gifts, or should want the gifts He has chosen to give to someone else. My daughter wrote this verse out for handwriting recently and gave it to me, Matthew 6:8 Remember your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask Him. I love that! How often do I need to be reminded that God knows. He knows. And He gives good gifts to me. Exactly what I need. Sometimes I don't think His gifts are what I need. But they are.

Not sure I'm making a huge amount of sense here. Hopefully you get my idea.

It's a World of White

My oldest daughter wrote a poem today. I think it is great!

It's a World of White

It's a world of white, the snow flakes fall silently.
Everything shines and twinkles with snow.
It's a pretty world. It makes everybody happy and gay.
We sled and make snowmen and catch snowflakes on our tongues!
It's a wonderful world of white.

Snow and other things

It is snowing a bit today. My almost 7 year old daughter said, "Mommy, I know why it is snowing so much!" Me, "Why?" Her adorable answer, "because I prayed!" :-)

Strange sight in my house today. Maybe I should say amazing, bizarre, incredible. My oldest daughter was CROCHETING while listening to history. Crocheting. I have not one clue how to crochet. I'm sure people have attempted to teach me. Didn't work. Here is my daughter, crocheting. Her friend taught her. Her friend whose mother doesn't crochet either. Did I mention they are only 9? Amazing.

Do you ever struggle with God's will? I am, currently, in a couple areas. One issue is in where we live next. My husband can retire from the Air Force in a year. My dream has always been to have some land and a little farm. Couple of chickens, big garden, horse, etc. My other dream (for more than 20 years) has been to live in Colorado. So, where do you think I want to go next? Yep. Colorado. How much land? Minimum 5 acres. So, when my husband even remotely suggests that maybe that isn't where God wants us to be, what do I do? Yep, throw a little fit. "What about what I want? What about ME? How come no one listens to me? Cares about what I want? Me, me me me me." That's pretty much how I sounded on the phone. You can imagine my husband's joy at that moment. I did call him back and apologize for being SO incredibly self-centered and dumb. (crazy?)

A little bit later I took our son up for his nap. He starts crying, "outside, outside!" "No, you're taking a nap." We get up into the boys' room. As I'm hugging him next to his crib he says, "Ses bed." He wants to sleep in his brother's bed. I told him "no." Now, he, at 22 months, doesn't understand why he can't nap in Ses bed. I do. He won't sleep! He gets up and starts playing with toys. He needs a nap. I need him to nap. :-) So, even though he doesn't understand and throws a fit, he has to nap in his crib.

Sad that I'm not much more grown up than him. "But God, I want to live in Colorado! WHY? I don't understand!" (whine, fuss, cry, stomp) Not that God has said NO to it, but He might. Do I trust Him or not? Do I really trust that HE knows what is best for me? That HE is good?

Yes, I do.

Introduction

I am thrilled to let you know that my cousin, Ranee, has started a blog! I won't tell you all the wonderful, fabulous, interesting facts about her. Otherwise I will paralyze her and she won't be able to blog anymore. :-) Just trust me, if she gets over her perfectionism, she will be an awesome blogger.

So, Ranee, start writing! Think of all the things you want to tell the world. All the opinions you have to share. All the wisdom. :-) All the sarcastic comments. All the cute things Daniel does (or did when he was 3). Have fun!

Spiritual Gifts

My husband did a couple different "spiritual gifts" inventory quiz type things online the other day, for both of us. I found some of the results very interesting.

First, did you know that "voluntary poverty" is a spiritual gift? Lucky me, I have it. Really lucky me, my husband doesn't. Therefore he can justify purchasing a McMansion for a house and a Hummer as his next car. He isn't good at being poor. He's good at having the nicer things in life. Therefore, he should just be thankful for his gifts and understand the areas he isn't gifted in, right? :-) Yah, right.

Here is another interesting one: "Artistry: While not specifically in the New Testament, God has gifted individuals with remarkable craftsmanship and artistic skills from the earliest of recorded time. The Old Testament provides vivid accounts of God’s distribution of giftedness in these areas - whether for the building of temples or for use to glorify God in praise." OK, so you're telling me it isn't in the Bible as a gift, but it still IS a gift. Obviously people are gifted in artistic areas. But is that a spiritual gift?

My favorite spiritual gift, which thankfully neither of us possess AT ALL (we both got a zero) - celibacy. I'm guessing that's a good thing since we're married. Oh, maybe I should look at those questions - HE did answer them for both of us. Hmmmmm. :-)

So, if you really want to know. My husband is gifted in the exact ways I would expect - leadership, administration, teaching, giving. Me, I'm gifted in hospitality, mercy, discernment and giving. We are, no surprise, pretty much polar opposites. I love that God fits us together like a puzzle!

Being Weak

One of the big "themes" surrounding Katie's death was just how much of an impact she had on people. Katie, the girl who couldn't "do" anything. She couldn't speak, serve, walk, offer a word of encouragement, ... nothing that we consider important to impacting others. My sister, Dawn, has repeatedly told me about a book, The Power of the Powerless. Now, I don't claim to be super smart these days, but I'm still a little embarrassed to admit how long it took me to actually listen to that title. Katie, although without an ounce of human power was extremely powerful to people. Wow, isn't God amazing how he can use her? It has made me think about the verses in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Really? Do we pray to be weak? Do we delight in being weak, in having difficult times? Do we? Katie has made me think about these things. When I am weak, I whine about it! I complain, I get frustrated and irritated. I certainly don't rejoice. I fail to think about how my weakness allows Christ's power to be shown all the more.

I think my new prayer is that Christ will make me weak. Which He does. :-) Which I am. But, I want people to see it. I am weak, the only strength that I have is Christ living in me. It is not me. I am not a great mom, not a great housekeeper, not a great homeschooler. I am not patient or kind to my children on my own. Only with Christ's help. I know this, but do others? God, let people see the strength in me as being Your strength, not mine. Thank you for Katie's life and her power.

A Strange Sensation...and an embarassing confession

I went for a run yesterday. Not something I'm doing often these days, but still go when I get time. I wore capris because the weather was nice and I knew my legs looked too ugly for shorts. As I started my run, I began to feel the wind blowing through my hair ... on my legs. GROSS. So, now you know. I rarely shave. I'm fortunate to have very blond, fine hair on my legs. But it felt gross. The entire run. Guess I better shave!

My "Melissa" Day

My friend, Melissa, is currently single parenting her 2 boys. She has had some of the craziest things happen to her during the past (almost) 6 months. So, the other day, during a very crazy time for me, I kept thinking about Melissa.

My flight from Colorado was canceled on Wednesday, so I was flying home with our "baby" (21 months) on Thursday. It had, for obvious reasons, been a very very tough week. Add to that the fact that he doesn't sleep well or eat well when we are traveling - AT ALL. So, you have 2 sleep deprived people and one who only wants to "murse". We get on our 1st flight, all is well. About 45 minutes into the flight, he coughs a couple of times and throws up all over himself, me and the tray. I push the call button for the flight attendant and sit there, slowly dying. The man across the aisle hands me a kleenex, which cleaned up about an ounce of the puke. The flight attendants come (they were super sweet), hand me paper towels with soap and water; help me strip off his pants, shoes and socks; give me a bag for them, etc. I go to the bathroom and soap down my shirt and pants and his shirt. Back to the seat. Of course, he wants to murse. 10 minutes later, throw up again. This time he douses his shirt completely and the magazine I had just bought. Now he is flying in a diaper. We smell oh so pretty. The flight attendants gave me a blanket and kept worrying about how cold it was outside. All I could think was "who cares - we're just changing flights!" He finally falls asleep on my lap and I sit there, numb. I'm praying so hard, "please God, don't let him throw up again, PLEASE". Flight lands, and I quickly realize why a blanket is necessary - we are going to deplane down the STAIRS of all things, and have to walk, OUTSIDE, to the terminal. Thanks. I put my back pack on, get him situated in the blanket, get in the aisle and hear him start coughing again. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Yep, puke in my hand this time. By now I've realized that diapers are absorbent and I'm using them to clean up the junk. This time I just sit there, waiting for everyone else to get off the plane before getting up and leaving. Yes, I'm shaking all over. Just way too much stress for this girl for the week. I have a 55 minutes layover, so I take my diapered child into the 1st store that looked like it might have kids stuff. I walk up to the lady, "Please, I need your help. My son threw up all over himself. I need a shirt and pants, size 2T, and I'm in a hurry." She was wonderful. We now own a $42 Cincinnati Bengals sweat suit. Worth every penny. I call my husband, tell him our sad tale and try to not cry. Call my parents, shaking, ask them to pray for me as I'm about to become hysterical. 2nd flight. God gave me the gift of a seat between me and this other guy, who, thankfully, was a tad tipsy (yes, I'm thankful for a half-drunk stranger on an airplane!). We get seated and within 15 minutes of takeoff, puke again. Then I start to realize that he has also pooped and it STINKS. So, now there is this huge dilemma - do you change the diaper and use potentially your last diaper for the smelly diaper or save the diaper for the next puke? I sat there for a while debating this until I realized that his diaper was leaking a little bit on my leg. Obviously I had to change the diaper and realized that I still had one diaper left. So, the foul smelling diaper goes in the diaper bag. He has only one more small episode of puke (I was refusing him any water at this point, despite his many pleas for "dink mamma, dink"). We left the plane and threw the diaper away as quickly as possible. I'm sure my husband was thrilled to greet his stinky wife and child! :-)

So, there you have it, my Melissa day. God bless you Melissa for allowing Brent to leave for 6 months. I'm not sure I have it in me!
